Homemade Gumdrops

Homemade Gumdrops

So.  Did you guys know you could make your own gumdrops?

Well, you totally can.

Maybe this isn’t news to you, but it sure was to me.

Gumdrops are one of my all-time favorite holiday candies.  When I found out that I could make them myself–and that they are super easy to do–I just might have done a little happy dance.

Doodle did, too, and has been asking me for “those gumdrops” nonstop over the last few days.

What can I say, he takes after his mama.

These fun little holiday candies take less than 10 minutes to mix up, though do require some chilling time before cutting.  You could definitely jazz them up even more by using small cookie cutters to cut them out into fun holiday shapes.

Since I had a very impatient 5-year old “assisting” me with these, I simply used a pizza cutter to slice my gumdrops into squares/rectangles/rhombii.  Maybe not quite so pretty, but it got the job done.  🙂  And Doodle had a lot of fun rolling these in sugar.  We just won’t talk about how much sugar was on the kitchen floor when we finished.

Homemade Gumdrops

Print
Ingredients
  • 2 cups sugar, plus extra for rolling
  • 1⅓ cups applesauce, unsweetened
  • 2 small (3-ounce boxes) Jello, any flavor
  • 2 envelopes unsweetened gelatin
Method
  1. Spray a 9x13 pan with nonstick cooking spray and set aside.
  2. Combine all ingredients in a medium saucepan. Allow ingredients to stand for 1 minute, then bring to a boil over medium heat. Stir constantly an allow mixture to boil for 1 minute.
  3. Immediately pour mixture into your prepared pan and refrigerate until firm, 2 to 3 hours.
  4. To shape your candies, loosen the sides of the mixture from the pan with a spatula, and turn out onto a cutting board. Cut out gumdrops with a cookie cutter, pizza cutter or knife. If the candy sticks to your knife, trying running it under hot water first.
  5. Roll candies in extra sugar and place on wax paper until slightly dry. Store in an airtight container.

Aimee, they do actually taste like fruity gumdrops. The consistency isn’t quite the same, but it is pretty close. Next time I might pour them into a smaller pan so that they’ll set thicker and I can cut them out into actual gumdrop shapes. But they were fun to make, and my 5-year old loves them!

They do actually taste pretty close to a real (fruity) gumdrop. I actually prefer the spice flavored gumdrops, but Doodle wanted fruit flavors, so he was happy with how these turned out. 🙂

Okay, I made these last night. Word to the wise – Do NOT set these things on any unprepared surface!!! I made the mistake of flipping half the pan out onto a plate w/o spraying it, and it was like glue. Delicious glue, but glue! XD

Also, I personally would not call these gumdrops. To me, they are far closer to the Sunkist Fruit Gems in texture! Hm, and I wonder…does the addition of applesauce make them a part of a balanced diet? ;D

Dumb question … When making this do I add the water for the jello? Just wondering as the apple sauce is the only ‘liquid’.

hi ashley, these look awesome but I am in the UK could you help me with some of the recipe pls? Jello is jelly right? so in the UK jelly is in little rubbery cubes that you add boiling water to to make a jelly. is jello the same? also how come you need to add gelatin in this recipe if you already added jello? also where does the jello get its water from to melt? sorry if I’m being stupid. also how much gelatin are in your US sachets? and what weight are the jello boxes, just so I know to compare with UK ones?
    Thanks,
